2019 Race Cancelled

2019 Race Cancelled

As a result of poor weather conditions, the 2019 Calgary Police Half Marathon has been cancelled.

Our primary concern is the safety of both our participants and volunteers and after considering a number of factors, and in consultation with a number of authorities, the decision has been made to cancel the half marathon, 10K, 5K and Rookies & Legends components of the race.

We have a responsibility to provide a safe and well-marshaled course. Committee members assessed the course and found snow drifts in place of more than two feet. This course is a challenging one at the best of times, and while there are those who will have trained well, today’s race conditions are even more difficult.

In order to run a safe race, we must marshal it well. Our marshaling responsibility is to direct and support runners. Today, the weather conditions would require extraordinary support from our marshals, which is not practical. Our route navigates some roadways, but we have determined that the road conditions also present increased risk to runners and drivers and to those marshaling those key points.

Travel is cautioned by the police. They describe the significant impact of last night’s snow storm around the city with numerous vehicles stuck and abandoned.

We were optimistic that the conditions would improve overnight, however we can’t compete with Mother Nature. We appreciate all the effort that goes into this race every year, from the dedicated volunteers, to our runners, to our greater Calgary community that allow us to put on this great event. We are disappointed it won’t go ahead this year.

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of this iconic run. We hope you’ll stay tuned and join us for this milestone event. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Stay warm and stay safe!
